(WMC-TV) - The Memphis International Airport Authority has a new chairman Thursday.

Jack Sammons is a former Memphis City Council member and has been on the airport authority board for two years.

With a show of hands, the Memphis airport authority elected Sammons as the new head of the Memphis International Airport Authority.

Sammons' goal is to make Memphis International Airport more competitive, but he admits he has a lot to learn about the airline industry.

"We want to build a competitive environment, bring the other airlines in so we can offer competitive airfares so that we can grow our community," said Sammons.

Airport Authority Vice Chairman Herbert Hilliard believes Sammons is the man who can help Memphis International overcome its challenges.

"I think his energy and enthusiasm and the contacts will help move Memphis International Airport forward," said Hilliard.

For now, Sammons is relying mostly on his experience as a frequent flier.

"The dynamics can be sobering when you think that the industry is actually contracting not expanding," said Sammons.

He said he will be relentless about bringing more competitive air fares to Memphis.

"He's been a good board member the last two years, and I think he's going to be a very good leader," said airport president Larry Cox.

Memphis International Airport needs a good leader.

Sammons has his work cut out for him, at an airport that frequently ranks number one in the country for the most expensive airfares.

"I'm an intellectually curious type of person and I'm going to be reading everything I can get my hands on," said Sammons.
