Victim identified in deadly officer-involved shooting

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Police released the name of the man who was shot and killed by officers investigating a loud noise complaint.

24-year-old Steven Askew was slumped over the wheel of his car at Windsor Place Apartments Thursday night.

When officers walked up to the car, Askew pointed a gun at the officers.

In response, both officers shot and killed him.

Rickey Farmer, a man who lives nearby, said he heard about four shots.

"This was a deadly force situation," said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.

Within the past month, there have been three deadly, officer-involved shootings which were, according to police, precipitated by someone pointing a gun at them.

Within the past 18 months, ten Memphis police officers have been shot in the line of duty.

Two died, officers Martoiya Lang and Timothy Warren.

Armstrong said those shootings have his force not on edge, but rather on added alert.

"I won't say we're at such a level that it's creating an uncomfortable situation for our citizens," said Armstrong.

The shooting is unrelated to the loud music.

As a matter of routine, the two officers are on paid leave.

"You have officers that are sworn to protect the law and protect the citizens of this city. You have people that have absolute disregard for that," said Armstrong.
