Parents camp out to get kids into school

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – Hundreds of Memphis parents are braving the cold temperatures to make sure their child gets a spot in one of Memphis' 44 optional schools. Tents stretch as far as the eye can see along Avery around to Hollywood.

"We love our kids, we love our city and we want this to work. Everyone here wants the public schools to be good," said Corrie Metcalf, parent

Over 100 parents have already lined up outside MCS headquarters.

Some have been here since Thursday to make sure their child gets into one of the city's optional schools.

Sirini Rallabandi is trying to get his son into White Station Middle.

"It's not me giving up my life. It's me giving life to my kids by giving them a better education," Rallabandi said.

Some parents even came equipped with the convenience of home - like satellite TV. Others pass the time working or playing.

Keenan Hilson is number 19 on the list in the application process. He is also trying to get his son into White Station Middle.

"He's a smart kid…he's great," Hilson said. "So, if this is all it takes, I'll keep doing it."
