Woman accuses MPD officer of rape

MEMPHIS, TN -

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Neighbors said the 100 block of South Cox in Cooper Young was lined Sunday afternoon with police cars.

"Probably about 10 cars, and then there was a crime scene investigation van," said Joe Calhoun.

There's always a large police presence when one of their own is involved.  In this case, a 21-year-old woman who lives on the block believes an off-duty officer raped her.

"These are people you're supposed to trust to protect you and the neighborhood so it's very unsettling," said Calhoun.

"Absolutely, someone who is supposed to be an officer of the law," said neighbor Sarah Burris.

Burris and her boyfriend have lived in the neighborhood for more than a year.

"It seems the people we trust the most are the ones we come to fear," Calhoun said.

The alleged victim told police she and the officer are acquaintances.  She said they met around 3:00 Sunday morning on Beale Street, where they both work.

The woman claims she did not tell the officer where she lived when she left, although he later showed up while off duty and somehow gained access to the house.

That's when the possible sexual assault took place.  It's the latest crime possibly involving a police officer.

"It's not going to look good in Memphis after about 12 or 13 policemen already," said neighbor Dennis Phillips.

Actually, more than 20 officers were charged with crimes in 2012.

"That's a lot," Phillips added.

The officer under investigation in this situation is relieved of duty pending the outcome of an investigation.  So far, no charges have been filed.
