DESOTO COUNTY, MS -
(WMC-TV) - A fight for a family tree in North Mississippi came to a head Wednesday as county officials tore down a tree that had been standing for decades for a growing interstate.
Crews were on Interstate 269 in DeSoto County and took down the tree, as instructed by the North Mississippi Transportation Commissioner.
The tree was there for more than a hundred years and a family nearby didn't want to see it go.
The land and home with a front row view of the construction has been in Alvin Boyce's family for decades.
The tall shagbark hickory tree had been there all along.
"To me it's a landmark, my granddaddy, and great grand daddy and them come in here as slaves and was able to buy this land and pay for it, and we've been here," said Boyce.
Boyce is clear that he's not against the construction, or progress the loop could bring the county. He just wanted to keep his family tree.
North Mississippi Transportation Commissioner said the tree needed to be torn down for safety reasons.
