Possible new historic club owner plans demolition

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The historic Nineteenth Century Club may soon have a new owner.

The club selected an unidentified bidder as the winner Thursday.

Representatives of the Memphis Heritage group said the soon to be owner plans to demolish the 104 year old building.

It's stands on Union Avenue which is now in the middle of fast food restaurants and doctors offices, though back in 1909 it was surrounded by other mansions like it.

"We've been concerned about it for a while," said Memphis Heritage Executive Director June West.

Similar in design and age is the Galloway Mansion, though unlike the Nineteenth Century Club, it's protected because it's in the Evergreen Historic District.

West hopes the new owner will understand the building's history and want to preserve it.

"You can't replace. You couldn't even build it. It was built by a lumber baron. He lived there," she said.

The process isn't over. Closing is still weeks away.
