Only on 5: Stray bullet murder victim's family speaks; suspect named

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – "As we speak now, you know, tears are about to come out of my eyes," said Ed McLemore during an exclusive interview Friday with Action News 5.

He clutched an American flag as he spoke with us.

It was presented to him in honor of his 62-year-old sister Diane Ward.  The retired Navy Reservist was killed in a bizarre shooting two weeks ago.

"I'm going to miss my sister very much, you know?" said McLemore.  "She was the world to me, and I love her very much."

Ward was helping another brother, who is disabled, unload groceries outside his home in Frayser when police say a stray bullet struck her.

"She was out there fixing to bring in the rest of the groceries and he heard the shot and ran back out and saw her on the ground," said McLemore.

Memphis Police identified the suspected shooter Friday as 24-year-old Bryant Williamson.

He is now wanted on active warrants for, among other things, First Degree Murder.

Although it is unclear at whom he was shooting, police say Diane Ward was an innocent victim.

"It hit the family hard," said Ed McLemore.  "We just couldn't believe it, you know?"

McLemore told us he'd like to see Williamson surrender.

"And say he's sorry or something," said McLemore.  "And make me feel he wasn't trying to kill her or it was an accident. Say something to the family, you know."

And help bring closure, he said, to another senseless Memphis murder.
