School bus shooting investigated as a hunting accident

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – A school bus shooting in Panola County is now being investigated as a hunting accident.

Now, one North Mississippi student is in the hospital.

As that 10-year-old boy recovers at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, the Panola County Sheriff's Office parking lot is full of authorities investigating Monday's shooting as a hunting accident.

Exclusive Chopper 5 video gives the best look at authorities piecing together a shooting that injured a young boy on his school bus.

"The child was in the bus as it was moving," District Attorney John Champion said. "He was shot through the back."

Champion says investigators believe the bullet grazed the child's back. Action News 5 has learned the 10-year-old was a student in the South Panola School System.

"I think we've got a pretty good report on the child that he's going to be OK," said Champion.

But why would someone fire a shot near a moving school bus full of kids in a rural part of the county?

"It could possibly have been a hunter out there that had fired a shot that hit the bus and hit the child," Champion answered.

Champion says authorities believe they know who the shooter is, and so far the person has been cooperative in their investigation.

"I mean, we've got a pretty good idea who did it, and just going to look and see what he was doing out there and why the shot was fired," Champion said.

Again, that 10-year-old is expected to be just fine. Investigators will meet again Tuesday morning.
