Citywide vote could change town's 'dry city' status

SENATOBIA, MS -

(WMC-TV) - It may not be long before ordering a beer in Senatobia would be as easy as flagging down a bartender.

Currently, Senatobia, Mississippi is considered a dry town. But soon, that could change. For the first time, it won't be a county wide election making the decision. It will be the citizens of Senatobia who will cast the votes.

"Ever since I moved to Tate County about 40 years ago, it comes up every few years and they always vote it down," said Cheryl Thompson.

A group called "Senatobia For a Vote" gathered enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot. They hope excluding the rest of Tate County will lead to growth in the form of restaurants, industry, and jobs.

"I have a lot of people in my church that's unemployed. They don't have jobs. We need this for our community. For growth and development within our community," said Reverend Tyrone Catchings.

Senatobia, the county seat, is surrounded by wet towns and cities.

A new law paved the way for this election, allowing for it if 20 percent of the city's registered voters signed the petition.
