MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis City Schools has an interim leader.

The countywide school board appointed MCS legal counsel Dorsey Hopson.

He is no stranger to the ongoing developments in the district.

Hopson has been at the forefront of the Memphis and Shelby County merger from the very beginning.

Even before the actual merger referendum vote, Hopson took part in the district's public information campaign called "Just So You Know."

It was designed to share information with the public about a possible merger.

Hopson will actually begin his tenure at the MCS Helm on Feb. 1, the day after current superintendent Kriner Cash leaves his post.

He will hold that position through July 1, that date also being the official date of transfer for MCS' merger into Shelby County Schools.

The county-wide school board chose Hopson over Chief of MCS School Operations Dr. Roderick Richmond.

Hopson said he has no desire for a long-term superintendent's post.
