MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong met this week with chiefs from across the nation in Washington, D.C.

"It was horrific," said Armstrong.

That's how he described what the chief of Newtown, Connecticut had to tell his counterparts about responding to the recent mass shooting that left 20 elementary school children dead.

"Your heart's got to go out to the people of Newtown," said Armstrong.

Armstrong said he prays such a crime never happens on his watch in the city of Memphis.

"You know, I have a two year-old daughter myself and I cannot imagine dropping her off at school and getting a call there's been a shooting at that school," said Armstrong.

Having officers prepared to handle whatever happens is a goal of every police department. But Armstrong said gun control is an increasingly important component.

"There's a consensus something needs to be done," said Armstrong. "Now, what needs to be done is a very intense debate."

There may be different ways to deal with the kind of violence that struck Newtown, Connecticut and the types of gun crimes that far too often plague our city streets.

"We have to have some tougher gun control laws in this city, in this nation," said Armstrong.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton recently announced a local gun control initiative aimed at taking illegally traded weapons off the streets.
