MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police are looking for the people responsible for robbing several band students who were downtown for a music convention.

More than 1,000 student musicians and their instructors are gathering at the Cannon Center for a convention this weekend. They are practicing for a big concert, but last night, the fun was interrupted when several teens were robbed during a dinner break.

Everyone at the convention was selected from their school. But Thursday night, several of the students were robbed when they slipped away from their chaperone.

The father of one of the victims did want to appear on camera, but he said his 15-year-old son was walking back from dinner when he was jumped.

"Four guys jumped out on him and take his cell phone and his backpack," said the teen's father. "And hit him, hit him a couple of times."

According to a police report, the four men asked his son if he wanted to buy drugs.

Back at the Cannon Center, organizers have spoken with students and directors about the importance of staying together, especially outside the convention center.

"We take the safety of our children as our number one priority. Our children are our most prized possession," said Barry Trobaugh, who organized the event.

The performances the students are rehearsing for will be open and free to the public. More information can be found by visiting this website: http://www.wtsboa.com/pdf/programs/convention_docs/schedule.pdf
