MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 5-year-old boy from North Mississippi is the most recent victim of the widespread flu outbreak.

The Mississippi Department of Health confirmed the first pediatric flu death in the state since the 2009-2010 H1N1 Pandemic flu season.

Wesley Mashburn, 5, grew up with chronic underlying health conditions. He died as a result of complications with the flu on Sunday.

According to his family, Wesley died of SIDS when he was just a baby. His heart stopped beating for 16 minutes, leaving him brain damaged for the rest of his life. He has spent his life bed ridden and on oxygen.

Doctors recently told his mother he had a rare strain of the flu that would not have been prevented with a flu shot. She cannot imagine how he got the virus since nobody else in the family, including his other siblings, have been sick.

Action News 5's Anna Marie Hartman is sitting down with his family to talk about what led to his untimely death.
