WHITEHAVEN, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Students at Bishop Byrne Middle & High School are protesting the closure of their school.

Students and faculty staged a peaceful protest Friday in hopes that this is not the end of an era. But as it stands the school will close at the end of the year.

Friday night is Bishop Byrne's final homecoming basketball game.

Students are protesting and praying on Shelby Drive as the basketball teams prepare for the last game in the history of their Whitehaven school.

The Catholic Diocese announced that rising costs and lower enrollment led to their decision to close the school. Since then, Action News 5 has received countless letters of complaints, students have staged numerous protests, one of which included a walk out earlier this week to express disappointment, even outrage over the decision.

"We're a family, and we're not just a school," said Zelra Martin, who is a parent of one of the students.

A lot of the complaints have come from the school's alumni. Traditionally, they attend these homecoming celebrations and even more are expected Friday night to mark the bittersweet end of an era.
