**UPDATE** ... A fund has been set up for the mom of the little boy who died as a result of the flu.  People who would like to help the mother of 5-year-old Weslee Mashburn can mail or drop off a donation in the name of Jennifer Jackson at any BancorpSouth Bank branch.

MEMPHIS, TN -- (WMC-TV) – Five-year-old Weslee Mashburn of Horn Lake died at Le Bonheur Children's hospital five days ago.

The little boy's mother says Mississippi health department officials told her it was a rare strain that would not have been covered by a flu shot.

Jennifer Jackson lost her son just 48 hours after he was rushed to the hospital.

"It happened really quickly, I mean really, really quickly," said Jackson.  "They came and told me they were admitting him, that he had tested positive for the flu which you know blew me away because no one around me has been sick or him."

Weslee's underlying health problems made it impossible to overcome.

"When he was six months old he died in his sleep of SIDS and there is a documented death of 16 minutes," explained Jackson.  "He was paralyzed from it, blind and had a feeding tube and on oxygen, most of the time.  Sometimes he would go a week and a half without it."

Weslee's oxygen intake plummeted last Friday.  After a day at the hospital his condition got worse.

"And 24 hours later he was dead.  And no one has the flu from him 'cause I was in the bed with him right up until he took his last breath," Jackson said.

There's only one source of peace for this grieving mother.

"That he's not suffering anymore.  I knew he was probably going to die sooner or later but I never thought it would have been the flu," Jackson stated.
