MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – Education leaders will make tough decisions on the $90 million cash shortage that could affect your child's education and your money in the next school year.
Monday morning, the Shelby County Board of Education will get together for an all-day budget retreat. They will discuss the hot issue on the table - funding the Unified School District (USD) in August. They will also talk about where that money will come from.
A big chunk of money for the schools has been eliminated since the City of Memphis will no longer contribute to the district's budget. Merging the city and county schools also creates salary challenges.
Both Shelby County and Memphis City teachers and administrators will have equal salaries in the Unified School District. Programs may also be slashed to make budget - that means layoffs and outsourced services.
Monday's budget retreat will start at 8 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. And later, the public will get a first look at the preliminary budget. That presentation will start at 6 p.m. at the Teaching and Learning Academy on Union Ave.
