(WMC-TV) – There are two hot button issues on the table for Memphis City Council Tuesday. And both could mean more money out of your pocket.
The council is talking a potential sales tax increase and possible fees for vehicle inspections. Those are two highly debated issues that residents in Memphis and Shelby County should keep an eye on.
Up first - the push for a half-cent sales tax hike. The proposal would raise sales tax to 9.75. Millions of those dollars would go towards funding pre-kindergarten programs and lowering city property tax rates.
It is similar to the Shelby County referendum voted down back in November. This proposal has Mayor A C Wharton's support, but has been a hard sell for some of the council members.
The other hot topic is the car inspection program. Last year, the council voted to cut its funding this June - hoping Shelby County would step in and help pay.
But leaders in the county don't plan to pitch in, so the State of Tennessee may take over. That means all Shelby County car owners will have to get inspected and foot the bill for it. The City says if Shelby County chips in, then you won't have to pay.
Expect to hear vocal opposition and support for both of these measures inside City Hall Tuesday. The first committee meeting on these issues will get underway at 9:30 a.m.
