MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - An elementary school was evacuated after the smell of gas filled the hallways.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to A. B. Hill Elementary School on East Olive Avenue in Memphis.

Crews on the scene said they did locate a gas leak in a mechanical room, but MCS is now saying a pilot light went out in the cafeteria, causing the smell.

Parents began arriving on the scene to see what was going on as hundreds of kids stood outside, some without coats.

After about 45 minutes, the kids were allowed back inside.

Action News 5's Kontji Anthony is on the scene working to learn more about the incident.
