Faulty fireplace forces family of 6 from their home

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Investigators say a faulty fireplace caused the fire that forced Travis Joiner, his wife, and their four sons from their home.

The family was settling in to watch some TV when they noticed smoke and heard an unusual sound.

"She heard a popping noise coming out behind the wall, behind the fireplace," said Travis. "So, I say, okay, what's going on? So, I tried to put the fire out, it wasn't that. Then I go outside, see the fireplace and the chimney, the chimney lit up."

Travis' wife woke up their boys, one of whom has cerebral palsy.

He said they ran to the fire station across the street and banged on the locked doors. They even honked their car horn, but could not rouse help until they ran to a pay phone around the corner.

"And, it's just by the grace of God that we still here, we're still living," said Travis. "You thank God that just the top caught fire, just the whole top that's it. It could have been the whole house. We could have been out here homeless for real."

Travis says he is also blessed that the Red Cross is helping his family get back on their feet.
