Mississippi speed limits could go up

North Mississippi -

(WMC-TV) - It appears they feel the need for speed in Mississippi. There is a proposal to raise the posted speed limit from 70 to 75 miles per hour and it is gaining traction.

Speed limits of 70 miles per hour may be a thing of the past if the bill is signed into law, but not everyone likes the idea of going faster.

The proposal passed overwhelmingly in the state's house and is making its way to the senate. But driver Wontina Wilson wants to put the breaks on the bill.

"70 is fine, I think that's fast enough for a person to be driving on the expressway," she said.

North Mississippi transportation commissioner Mike Tagert says he wants to hear safety input from patrolling officers.

Interstates 55, 69, and future I-22 could be in line for an increase if the bill is signed into law.

Wilson says she does not hate the idea, but she is more concerned for her safety than getting someplace a few minutes earlier.

"At 70 we're having major accidents, so imagine what it will be like at 75, if they're going 75 they're going to do 85," she said.

The Mississippi Senate is expected to consider the bill.
