MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Many Mid-Southerners are looking forward to a special town hall meeting that is aimed at bringing the community together to fight crime and violence.

"You know kids (aren't) safe in our schools. All that, yeah, I am fed up," said Memphian Cheronda Jones.

Tuesday's town hall meeting is will echo Dr. King's dream of non-violence.

"Everybody needs to come together as one to 'stamp' out crime, because you know it's over taking our city," said Memphian Rodney Jones.

Members of Operation Push, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference founded by Dr. King are sponsoring the event.

"We have some dedicated police officers, and now we have to step up to the plate as community people and particularly as people of faith. The church has the ability to help minimize crime in this community," said organizer Dwight Montgomery.

Mayor A C Wharton and Police Director Toney Armstrong may attend the meeting, according to organizers.

"We're just hoping to have a good turnout so that we can explain this to the people one on one. First handedly how important it is for us to galvanize ourselves, and to come together and do something to send a message to the community that the killing has got to stop," said organizer Leonard Dawson.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12 at 6 p.m. at Mt. Moriah East Baptist Church. The address is 1248 Haynes Road.
