Construction announced for 85-year-old bridge

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Big changes are coming to a busy stretch of Poplar Avenue and it could make traffic a nightmare until the construction job is done.

Talk to any driver who crosses the Poplar viaduct several times each day and they will tell you it can get scary.

"It's very narrow," said one driver. "Cars are going pretty fast."

The viaduct is the 85-year-old bridge where Walnut Grove Road turns into Union Avenue.

"You know you got to slow down cause it got a lot of curves around it," said another driver. "If you don't, well you can cause an accident if you're going go too fast."

TDOT announced plans to tear the bridge down because it is decaying fast due to its old age.

Plans are in the works to widen some of the lanes to 12 feet.

Signs that the bridge is past its prime are everywhere, from the orange barrels that guard a damaged guardrail to the broken light fixtures.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014 and last for three years.
