Huge scrap metal theft leaves ground torn up

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South man is behind bars after police say he pulled off a massive scrap metal theft fooling people nearby for months.

The ground is torn up and there are piles of mud and concrete everywhere. But what looks like the aftermath of a regular excavation is actually a million pound scrap metal theft.

Piles of rubble are all that is left from a recent demolition of the old Ford factory on Riverside Boulevard. But the concrete piles, mud mounds, and gaping holes in the ground are a different story.

Police say Cotry Maclin did the damage using a 350 Samsung Excavator that he owns as he unearthed 80 steel pipes he turned around and sold to Worley Brothers' scrap yard.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Maclin stole $100,000 worth of pipe and caused another $100,000 worth of damage.

A witness who did not want to appear on TV said they saw the excavator on site for the past several months and assumed it must have been a contractor who had been hired to do a job.

Scrap steel is worth about 10 cents a pound right now.

Simple division shows Maclin is accused of stealing a million pounds of pipe.

By phone, the realtor listed on property signage declined comment, but said scrap theft is becoming an unfortunate, widespread reality.

Another realtor associated with the property also declined comment, but said 368,000 square feet of damage is not correct, but she declined to elaborate.

Whatever it adds up to, Maclin stands accused of pulling off a months-long, large-scale scrap score.

He remains locked up on $25,000 bond.
