BIG BEAR CITY, CA -

(WMC-TV) - A Germantown couple relocated to the small mountain community of Big Bear City in California for work. But after the recent events involving Christopher Dorner, life in that small town is much different.

Pete and Susan Gwaltney moved to Big Bear City in 2009 when Pete took a job as the airport's general manager. But the serenity of resort life changed drastically when the fugitive former LAPD officer's burned out truck was found about five miles from the Gwaltney's home.

As a result of the manhunt for Dorner, Pete says the 15,000 or so Big Bear residents found themselves faced with big city concerns like carrying a weapon and making sure they look their doors.

"Oh yeah, Susan was at home riveted to the TV with the doors locked," said Pete. "We became very, very busy as every TV station in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department, the San Bernadino sheriff, the FBI, you know, every law enforcement agency kinda focused their attention up here."

Gwaltney says people in the area relaxed a bit thinking Dorner was long gone. The command post was moved and other visitors converged upon Big Bear.

"It was funny though, although nobody knew where he was this past weekend because we had 12 inches of new snow, the ski slopes were just packed on Saturday and Sunday," said Pete. "Until yesterday morning, when the proverbial 'all hell broke loose,' again."

Christopher Dorner was spotted again in Big Bear.

"Where he ended up was probably a stone's throw from where the command post was set up on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so it was interesting. He was able to watch what was going on," said Pete.

Pete Gwaltney says now he and the rest of his neighbors are just anxious to get back to enjoying the usual serenity of their resort area.
