Sewage seeping from walls closes downtown art studio

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) -  Raw sewage is leaking from a South Main business owner's basement walls.

Ephraim Urevbu said his art gallery has been shutdown for six months because of the problem. He is unable to use his workspace and the smell is overwhelming.

Urevbu said he contacted multiple agencies and no one is taking responsibility for the problem.

Art Village Gallery is right on the trolley line, and next to that is a patch of concrete from a recent repair to a city-owned manhole.

Urvebu believes the sewage in his basement and that repair are related.

He said the leaks are coming from city-owned sewage lines that run beneath the street.

"I'm afraid that one day this wall will just collapse," said Urvebu.

Urvebu said MLGW told him it wasn't their problem.

He had a plumber check the gallery's pipes - and got an all clear.

Now he wants the city to check their pipes, but he hasn't been able to get answers.

Action News 5 tried multiple times to talk to the department or person responsible, but never reached anyone.
