Andy's Got Your Back on a pirated software scam

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - U.S. postal inspectors recently stung an unnamed suspect who was making a fortune selling pirated copies of the multimedia Adobe software on eBay.

"He went from $0 dollars a month to $42,000 a month," said Postal Inspector Jan Kostka.

Kostka said postal inspectors began tracking the suspect, whom they requested we not identify, after thousands of complaints flooded Adobe's anti-piracy contact.

Inspectors went undercover, setting up fake Internet profiles on eBay to buy the counterfeit software, test it, then spring their trap.

"We seized $144,000 in cash, numerous counterfeit boxes of software and a high speed CD duplicator," Kostka said.

Inspectors said this is why consumers should be wary when they come across deeply discounted software. It's likely pirated. The person you're paying is the scam artist.
