MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The City of Memphis took action after hearing the story about a downtown business owner who was forced to close due to raw sewage leaking from his basement walls.

Early Friday morning, city crews were dispatched to the art studio on South Main Street to begin working.

The crews dug up a manhole they had previously repaired, only to find a pipe clogged with raw sewage.

Art studio owner Ephraim Urevbu took the crews into his basement to show them the problem firsthand.

"We dug up the immediate line. We've cleaned the lines, up and down the stream," explained Ross Arnold, who works with the sewage department. "It's good and everything is working well with the sewer pipe that we do have installed here."

Urevbu is happy crews finally looked at the problem.

"They said it was a blockage that they felt has been resolved, so we'll wait and see," he said. "Now I have a mess in my basement, so my next step is to figure out who is responsible."

Either way, Urevbu hopes to soon get back to doing what he loves.

"Just the fact that I can actually go to work. I'm looking forward to that," he said.

The public works department says they found a few defects in the line. They plan to be back to work Tuesday to finish the repairs.
