Parents react to potential name change for Unified School District

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Parents are reacting to a possible name change for the Unified School District.

Several parents are voicing their opinions via Twitter to the potential name change. Some want to stick with the name "Shelby County Schools", while another parent suggested the name "Metro Memphis Schools". Another suggested "Memphis Educational Services for Students" or MESS for short.

As some parents show concern over the issue of what to call the new district, others say what they do within the new system is more important.

"I think what they do is more important than what they name it," said parent Roy Rogers.

"I mean, a name's a name," agreed Allie Shackelford. "The most important thing is having a good school system for our kids."

Unified School Board member Patrice Robinson proposed a plan Monday night to study renaming the district once the merger happens.

"Names are important, your name is important, children's names are important, the name of the school district is important," she said.

Several board members said there are bigger fish to fry while others feel Memphis should be represented in the name.

"I don't see any harm in renaming it honestly, I don't think it would hurt anything," said parent Perrin Edwards.

Although changing letterhead, logos, websites, and others things would cost a lot, the board decided Monday night to discuss the issue more at next week's meeting.

After that, they may decide to solicit input from the public.
