Teacher residency discussion continues

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Changes to residency rules for Memphis teachers could move forward today. This is a direct result of the looming merger between Memphis City and Shelby County schools.

Wednesday, the Shelby County Commission will discuss an ordinance that would give Memphis City School teachers five years to move into Shelby County – or lose their jobs.

So here is how it will work. Teachers hired before September 1, 1986 would be grand-fathered in because that's when residency rules were first adopted for Shelby County teachers. All others would have five years to comply.

There are about 1,400 Memphis City School teachers living outside the county. Not to mention other Memphis City Schools employees. So this is going to affect a lot of people's lives, as well as your tax dollars.

Wednesday's reading is the second reading of the residency ordinance. If it passes, it still has to be read a third time.

We will let you know the outcome Wednesday on Action News 5 at 6 p.m.
