Ask Andy: Exempt robocalls

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - Many of you are bombarded with endless robocalls -- annoying, pre-recorded calls the federal government banned in 2009.

You keep getting them, even though you did not consent in writing to receive them and you're registered on both national and state Do Not Call lists.

You might be getting those calls because some robocalls are exempt from the Do Not Call list.

The federal General Services Administration's Office of Citizen Services said robocalls are allowed from:

* EMERGENCY PERSONNEL OR THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM

* TAX-EXEMPT NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

* SENDERS WHOM YOU'VE GIVEN CONSENT (i.e. your bank)

* BUSINESSES WHO'VE SOLD YOU SOMETHING (you signed a receipt or document consenting to the robocalls...or a collection agency attempting to collect a debt)

* POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS/CANDIDATES

If you're robocalled by someone or something who is not exempt, report the call immediately to the Federal Trade Commission at DoNotCall.gov.

If a collection agency robocalls you -- and you do not owe the debt in question -- follow my directions for sending an official "drop dead" letter to stop those calls here.
