Park renaming committee announced

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The renaming committee for several Memphis city parks has just been announced — and there is not a woman among them.

Seven men — co-chairs Bill Boyd and Harold Collins, the Rev. Keith Norman, Jimmy Ogle, Larry Smith, Michael Robinson, and Dr. Doug Cupples — now serve on the committee to rename three City of Memphis parks.

Executive director of the Memphis Area Women's Council Deborah Clubb said a very important percentage of the population has been left out of the entire renaming process.

She feels like the issue of renaming these parks isn't just a race issue, but a history issue as well.

"Certainly this would be the time I would think to add some women," said Clubb.

She said women have long played a vital role in Memphis history.

"I think it's another example of where we overlook the need for diversity in our community," said Memphis City Councilwoman Wanda Halbert.

Clubb feels their voices should be heard on how these three parks should be renamed.

"That's not acceptable to leave out women. We've already been left out of most of the city, in terms of naming things goes," said Clubb.
