Andy's Got Your Back on identity theft at a medical clinic

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - Postal inspectors said an identity thief working in a medical clinic stole the identity of a leukemia patient.

While the patient was undergoing chemotherapy, the employee was stealing his personal information from his check-in forms.

The thief started to deplete the patient's savings account, where he and his wife had saved money to buy a new home.

"When we found out that money was gone, I dropped to my knees because it terrified me that everything was going to be gone," said 'Elsy,' the patient's wife.

The inspectors' investigation found the clinic employee stole the identities of 35 more patients.

"They feel violated, I'm sure, since their information was stolen, especially during such a vulnerable time in their lives," said Postal Inspector Frank Schissler.

Good news, though. Inspectors nailed the clinic employee, along with his accomplices.

Elsy and her ailing husband got all of their money back.

"My husband and I are good," said Elsy. "We have a home, and he hit the cancer-free mark and have our sixth grand child on the way. We're doing great.
