CORDOVA, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Ridgeway High School Roadrunners are the number one basketball team in the City of Memphis.

Jimmy McClain, 49, was one of their coaches. He was found dead in his Cordova home around 10 a.m. Friday morning.  Detectives are investigating his death as a homicide.

"As a coach, he helped me on and off the court," said player Desean Dockery.

Dockery and teammate Shakobe Ingram spoke with Action News 5 about McClain shortly after another coach broke the news in the locker room about his death.

"Everybody just pretty much got sad and we couldn't believe it," said Dockery.

McClain was found dead Friday morning inside his home on Cordova Club Drive.  There were no apparent signs of forced entry.  Deputies went there to check on him when he did not show up for work.

His sister, Carla, told Action News 5 that McClain not only taught, coached, and played basketball.  She said he preached at a church in Arkansas.

"Sweet, sweet to his soul," said Carla McClain.  "Wouldn't hurt a flea."

"And when I found out, I started to cry but couldn't really get it out because there were so many people around me," said student Silvia Watson.

She knew McClain's skills on the court, but said they were matched in his personal finance class.

"I came to school ready to see Mr. McClain because that's my favorite class in the whole wide world," said Watson.  "He made my day so many times."

McClain's players will be thinking of him Saturday when they hit the court against Hamilton.

"Play like we always do and make this game for him," said Dockery.

McClain played a number of years for minor league basketball teams in Memphis.  Investigators are not revealing how they believe he was killed.  They said no one else in the neighborhood should be concerned for their safety.
