MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – The University of Memphis prides itself on being ranked one of the safest large campuses in the country.
That came into question Thursday when an armed man attempted to rob a faculty member.
The victim was walking home from a classroom on Patterson to a home on nearby Watauga around 9 p.m.
According to a Memphis police report, the suspect said, "If you don't get on the ground now I'm going to shoot you."
A neighbor saw the crime in progress and yelled out.
The suspect, who was wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt, ran off and jumped into a blue or silver car that was waiting for him.
We spoke with freshman Johnny Luckett about the security on campus.
"I think campus safety is one of the most important things," said Luckett. "Being a college student, you don't want to be in college fearing that you might get robbed or you might die going to your car."
Students and faculty consider the interrupted robbery a wake-up call.
"In the daytime it's no problem but at night, not so sure about that," said faculty member Faye Tao. "My friends are always telling me don't go out after it's dark outside."
Though the U of M Campus gets high marks in safety, that is not a free pass for them to let down their guard.
"Safety is a number one priority, especially in the city of Memphis, in any city for that matter because crime is everywhere," said freshman Rashaun Wright
