(WMC-TV) – A Mid-South community is in shock after a quiet neighborhood became the scene of a gruesome murder.

The shooting in Lauderdale County sounds eerily similar to another Mid-South shooting: Mary Winkler, who shot her husband in the back. Donna Neal is accused of the same thing.

"I can't believe it," neighbor Roma Hendrix said. "I just don't understand why if she did this I don't understand why it happened."

Donna Neal is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of her husband Randy Neal. It happened at 11:30 Tuesday night in the couple's home outside Ripley, Tennessee.

Investigators said Neal shot her husband at close range in the back as he slept in their bed.  His body was discovered on the floor next to the bed. She then took the shotgun and hid it under a trailer in the back yard.

"I didn't see nothing. I didn't hear nothing," neighbor Stacy Hendrix said. "It's shocking. They say she's the one that did it."

Randy Neal worked at Marvin Window and Doors in Ripley. His wife, Donna works at the U.S. Department of Agriculture farm service bureau in Ripley. No one there would comment.

"A spokesperson for the USDA in Washington, D.C. said that Donna Neal has worked there for more than 25 years. He said she was a program technician who helped farmers and ranchers sign up for government programs.

The couple has two adult children. Their son lives with them. Neighbors said he arrived home after working a late shift to find police outside the home.

Investigators said Donna Neal admitted shooting her husband. A motive is not clear. She is scheduled to be in court Thursday morning.
