MARSHALL COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - A husband, who is also a father of five, was killed in a freak accident in Marshall County.

"He was the best dad in the whole entire world," said his son, who earned the same name.

Billy Joe Barnes, Jr., 7, his four sisters, and his mother are in a world of hurt after the Billy Joe Barnes, Sr. was killed while working with his brother Monday.

"I miss you so much and I was crying for him," said Barnes, Jr.

"She finally said, 'He was in an accident with machinery.' And I said, 'What do you mean?' She said, 'It was a backhoe and it hit him in the head,'" said Barnes' wife, Ashley.

Barnes' family says something went wrong with the hydraulics in the machine. He was flown out, but did not make it, leaving behind a large family with a lot of uncertainty about their future.

"Being a mother of five, I don't have a driver's license and I don't have a way to do the things that my husband could do before," said Ashley.

Barnes fixed all sorts of things for people and the odd jobs helped make ends meet.

A friend from the family's church called Action News 5 to explain the challenges the family is up against. They were without gas for heat earlier this week.

"We were using a 100 pound bottle for some time because we never could afford to get the big tank full," explained Ashley.

Ashley has been blown away by the support from family and friends as she and her children try to get past a tragic accident that has forever changed their world.

"His spirit is at the heaven, and I know that. You have to pray for him," said Barnes, Jr.

If you'd like to help, church member Sam Reeves set up an account at Citizen's Bank. You can donate at branch locations in Victoria, Byhalia, and Barton in Marshall County.

The bank confirms all of the money in the account will go to the Barnes family.
