Mid-Southerns prepare for wintry mix

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - It's a Mid-South tradition, whenever there is a chance of snow — you can find Mid-Southerners stocking up at the grocery store.

There's been snowflakes and freezing rain, and they come and go quickly but nothing is sticking.

What has stuck is a tradition among Mid-Southerners no matter how much or how little accumulation is in the forecast. With Temperatures below normal and the mere mention of snow, many Midsoutherners prepare to be homebound.

"Well I'm worried about not being able to get out of the house to do some shopping," said shopper Shirley McGee.

Even though a system moving through doesn't pose a major threat, grocery store shopping carts start to fill up fast at the slightest sign of a wintry mix.

The Memphis Public Works Department Collins Yard is also fully stocked.

One day before the first flake fell, roads were primed with a brine to prevent bridges and overpasses from freezing over.

But not everyone has a plan.

"I don't ever prepare for winter, I just take it as it comes," said shopper Barbara Woods. "I'm pretty sure Action News Five and Dave Brown is right on target, and I'm expecting a little but hey, why not?"
