MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 78-year-old woman was stabbed in the throat and stomach as she was robbed in her own home.

The man police say is behind the brutal attack is now behind bars.

The victim was released from the hospital and is expected to be OK, but her caregiver says she is in no condition to talk abut the vicious attack that nearly killed her.

Neighbors are angry about what happened Saturday.

"I can't see why anyone would want to harm her," said neighbor Willie Smith. "Nice lady."

William Heath is accused of trying to kill the 78-year-old woman. Police say he is friends with her son and that the woman spent 30 minutes watching TV with him before he stabbed her in the throat and stomach.

Police say he was trying to rob her of the $500 she had hidden in her bra.

Derek Oliver lives directly next door. He was not home Saturday but he thinks she came to his house looking for help.

"I was just totally shocked, man," said Oliver. "When I made it home, I realized there was blood on my front door."

Oliver says his neighbor is known to hire out chores as a way to be generous.

"People that need help, she helps them out in some kind of way or another. So I couldn't see why anybody would want to do any harm to her," he explained.

Heath is behind bars. He is charged with robbery and attempted murder. Heath's bond is set at $150,000.

Investigators say Heath used a butcher knife, which they found hidden under the sink at the house where they found him.
