Child advocacy center will help victims of abuse, neglect

SOUTHAVEN, MS -

(WMC-TV) - A new child advocacy center opened Monday in Mississippi, but work was being done even before the facility officially opened its doors.

The workers at Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center in Southaven had already been working 22 cases from January to February when the new facility opened.

Beginning Monday, this facility will provide a new resource for children who are victims of abuse and neglect in DeSoto County.

"Our kids have been going to Oxford and Tupelo, and they used to go to Memphis, so when an investigation comes in, if they got an interview, they would have to drive an hour and a half two hours to get the interview done," said Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center Director Ashley Schachterle.

A forensic interviewer will talk to a child into a room designed to make them feel comfortable. As the child opens up, cameras will be rolling, which will allow a team of investigators to watch from a nearby room.

Schachterle says the phones have been busy as they try to schedule forensic interviews for next week.
