Memphians concerned with potential Bass Pro signs

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Downtown Memphis Design Review Board has delayed its decision on Bass Pro's pitch to perch huge signs on every side of The Pyramid Arena.

The board will make a decision March 18 or 19. Meanwhile, a group of citizens has packed the board meeting Wednesday night where Bass Pro is making its case to use signs 100 times larger than code allows.

Neighbors from Friends for Our Riverfront were taking up most of the room.

On the other side of the room was the Director of Community Development and the city's architects with Bass Pro Shops executives.

The citizens group said illuminated 90 by 66 Bass Pro Shops logos will hurt the view of the riverfront. Though they said they are glad for the business, they think 35 signs exceeding the current code size is too much.

So far in the meeting, Bass Pro has made their case for the signs.

"For the success of that project, there has to be proper signage and exterior site that is necessary to the success. The City of Memphis recognized those things and they agreed to that with Bass Pro Shops," said Tom Jowett of Bass Pro Shops.

The citizens were inside early Wednesday evening making their case to scale down the signs, some of which would go on each of the four sides of the Pyramid Arena.
