Southaven mayor determined to build senior center

SOUTHAVEN, MS -
(WMC-TV) - A heated debate is brewing in Southaven over a senior center. Mayor Greg Davis said it would fulfill a promise but the aldermen voted against it.

The Southaven senior adult building would eventually go by Snowden Grove Park, but currently there is nothing there.

Davis wants to get the ball rolling before his term expires, but he is meeting some opposition from several aldermen.

"We've been talking about building a senior adult building. It's been part of our plan when we asked our voters to approve a one percent restaurant tax," said Davis.

But in a heated Tuesday night meeting, the board of aldermen voted against issuing bonds for the project 5 to 2.

Ronnie Hale isn't against the project, but doesn't like the timing.

"We've got some major projects that we need to be prepared for, and this single project by itself, no it won't effect our bond indebtedness, but when you start having to issues bonds for everything else we have coming up, that puts us mighty close to bond indebtedness," said Hale.

Davis disagrees and believes there will still be money for future parks projects if bonds are issued.

"It's going to have to be a combination of a tourism tax paying for some and [General Obligation] bonds paying for some. So, why wait?"

The one cent tax that helps generate the money could expire in 2014. Hale wants to see if lawmakers will consider a bill that will allow the city to keep collecting the tax for future parks projects.

Davis said the proposal will be on the agenda at every single meeting from now until his administration is set to leave office this summer.
