(WMC-TV) – The Oakland Board of Aldermen accepted Scott Ferguson's resignation as mayor Wednesday night and swore in the vice mayor.

"I don't know him personally but he was a Church of Christ preacher when he was elected Mayor," said Oakland Resident, Gary Busby. "I'm very disappointed."

The Crittenden County Arkansas Sheriff has now opened an investigation into Oakland, Tennessee's former mayor Scott Ferguson.

A recent Action News 5 report revealed that an embattled Mid-South mayor has not one, but two wives.

The marriage license Action News 5 obtained shows Scott Ferguson married Miguelina Mora on Valentine's Day in West Memphis. Mora after only weeks of marriage is asking for a divorce or annulment because she alleges Ferguson is still married to the mother of his four children. That marriage happened in Tennessee according to records.

District Attorney Scott Ellington in eastern Arkansas asked the sheriff's office to open the bigamy investigation.

"The bigamy charge is what we will be investigating here in Arkansas," said Crittenden County Sherriff's Department Chief, Mike Callender. "We'll go down and verify the marriage license was issued if we can find where they were actually married."

The embattled former mayor is not only facing possible bigamy charges but also an investigation into his spending while he was mayor. He also has had to defend a bizarre photo that he said he does not know who took or when it was taken.

Bigamy in Tennessee and Arkansas is a misdemeanor punishable with a fine and up to 11 months and 29 days behind bars.

Bigamy is hard to stop because people who issue marriage licenses do not do background checks and there is no national data base for marriages.

Crittenden County investigators said Miguelina Mora will have to appear before a magistrate in Arkansas. No one answered the door at Mora's Cordova home and Scott Ferguson did not answer his phone Friday night.
