One Nashville man says if he could do it, anyone can. Just six years ago, he was a drug addict and homeless. This month, he's becoming a homeowner.
"It had to be in the Lord's plan. It wasn't in mine," new homeowner Randall Lewis said.
Building a home from the foundation up, for Lewis, is symbolic of how he's reconstructed his life.
"Today is a true blessing to be here from where I was. From homeless to a homeowner, I'm truly blessed," he said.
Six years ago, Lewis didn't have a home, but he decided to turn around his life of drinking and drugs.
He enrolled in a drug treatment program at Nashville homeless shelter Room in the Inn, got a job at Goodwill and Friday, Habitat for Humanity volunteers broke ground on Lewis' future home.
Usually, the homeowner helps build the home with people in the community, but this is a special project as Fort Campbell soldiers laid down the groundwork.
This week, Lewis will join in working on his home and the homes of two other Habitat families.
After four weekends of hard labor, Lewis will move in and start paying a mortgage on his own three-bedroom abode - something he never could've imagined just six years ago when he was sleeping on the streets.
Lewis said he plans to move his daughter and three grandchildren into his home and build a garden.
