Murdered mayoral candidate remembered by friends, family

COAHOMA COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Friends and family gathered in Clarksdale, Mississippi to remember the life of Marco McMillian Saturday morning.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Coahoma County College to remember McMillian. The mayoral candidate was murdered in late February.

Many members of his Phi Beta Sigma fraternity traveled from across the country to celebrate his life.

Friends and family said McMillian was a humble leader who made a decision to come home and serve his community.

They are saddened by how he was murdered, but spent most of Saturday sharing memories of his involvement in the fraternity and the impact he had on so many people's lives.

He was the youngest member of his fraternity after being inducted into the Outstanding Sigma's of the Southern Region Chapter.

But, although many found comfort in reminiscing Saturday – everyone is still hoping for justice.

"I know what was shared with the family though the coroner's office... Someone needs to pay for their crime. And that's going to be our call... That justice be done for Marco," said Godfather Carter D. Womack.

Lawrence Reed is the man charged in McMillian's murder. Reed was driving the car when it collided with another vehicle.

The FBI is monitoring the state investigation into the death of an openly gay mayoral candidate.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson asked the FBI to review the circumstances and evidence in the slaying of Marco McMillian. Thompson calls it a hate crime.
