MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The search for a prisoner who escaped from the Federal Prison Camp in Millington continues.

Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland, whose district includes Millington, wants answers about how the prisoner was able to escape.

Roland held a press conference Tuesday afternoon where he says a breakdown in communication is to blame for no one, including him, knowing many details about the escape.

Residents across the street from the Federal Prison Camp in Millington say they did not know about the escape of 37-year-old Travis Ware until Tuesday morning.

According to Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland, prison staff noticed Ware was missing during bed check Sunday night.

Roland says Millington's mayor and police chief were not notified of the escape for nearly 24 hours.

"On Monday morning, at some time, the Millington Police Department received a fax. I can't even figure out who the fax was from," Roland said.

Roland says Ware is considered dangerous.  He says Ware was in prison for distribution of cocaine.

"Evidently he just walked off. Evidently nobody was paying attention. Somebody had to turn their head," Roland added.

Ed Mynatt, who lives nearby, says he sees prisoners outside working and does not always see a guard on watch.

"Up and down cleaning out the gutters, cutting grass, planting a garden," Mynatt said.

Millington's prison is considered a minimum security, low risk prison.

Action News 5's call to the prison for more information was not returned.
