Class assignment prompts students to perform good deeds

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, TN (WSMV) -

A Sumner County school is putting the phrase "pay it forward" into action.

A social studies assignment has spurred a group of students to take action at Watt Hardison Elementary in Portland.

They third-grade students had to help a stranger, a family member and a friend through a random act of kindness.

"It's about teaching them it's more than about us. No matter your age, you can always do something for someone else," said the student's teacher, Angie Hypes.

Student Will Lindsey got creative with the assignment.

The child's grandfather recently had cataract surgery and lost his vision.

Will knew how much his grandfather loved keeping track of sports scores, so he found the sports section and got to work.

"I got on my iPad and pulled up FaceTime and read it out loud. He was so happy when I read it to him," said Will. "He could not believe that I could read as good as I did," said Will.

Will's friends also wasted no time.

One student helped a neighbor with laundry while another helped a friend with the dishes.

Another student even used his money to pay for a stranger's coffee.

The students had to give the stranger they were helping the teacher's email address. Hypes wanted to hear the responses from the people her students unselfishly helped out.

She received 50 emails from people across Middle Tennessee who told her they are now inspired to "pay it forward."
