NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An Antioch mom spent the night in jail after one of her small children darted into the street and was nearly hit by a car.

When the driver called 911, police discovered the children were home alone. Those who live nearby said this isn't the first time this happened.

Neighbor Cornelius Johnson has two children of his own, but lately he said he's been keeping an eye on his neighbors' children too.

"We're all concerned about those kids. Everyone's concerned about them," said Johnson.

Johnson said the children, who are all under the age of 8, have been left unattended constantly for months.

On Thursday, Johnson didn't notice the kids were outside until he heard a vehicle came screeching to a halt.

"He darted out real quick and the guy stopped all of a sudden," said Johnson.

One of the little boys had stepped out into the street in front of a pickup truck.

The driver, who slammed on the brakes, then became extremely upset.

"He was looking and hollering at the boy like, 'Where's your parents?'" said Johnson.

The driver told neighbors this is the second time a child from the house has almost been hit by a vehicle, prompting him to call police.

Police waited about an hour for the mother of the three kids, Maricruz Gonzalez-Montero, to return home. She told the officer she left to pick up her husband from work and buy a pizza.

Gonzalez-Montero was arrested and charged with three counts of child neglect.

Johnson said he hopes the arrest sends a strong message before one of the children is hurt or the children are taken from her custody.

Gonzalez-Montero's court date is set for April 25.
