Police suggest slicing registration sticker to prevent theft

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Something on the back of your car is proving to be a valuable target for thieves.

Metro police said they are seeing a lot of stolen registration stickers from car tags.

People will steal those 2013 or 2014 stickers to get out of having to renew their tags.

Registration for a basic license plate in Davidson County is $79 annually, so having one stolen isn't cheap.

The vehicle registration fee varies from county-to-county.

But police have a way you can fight back against the thieves and it involves a razor blade.

"You should do what we call a 'slice and dice' where you're using a razor blade and cutting horizontally," said Metro Police Commander Paul Trickey. "That way if they remove the sticker, they can't remove the entire sticker."

Police said this doesn't deface the tag, just makes it impossible for someone to peel off the whole sticker.

Metro police even made flyers about the process and posted them at the Davidson County Clerk's office.

People in the parking lot outside the clerk's office were following that advice.

"If it keeps someone from stealing it or having to replace it, I guess it's worth 10 seconds of having to cut it," said Mike Ash.
