MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The sixth grade is being eliminated from a number of Memphis schools next year. Meetings are being held this week giving the public a chance to learn more about the decision.

The first of three meetings in the district's southwest region starts at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Levi Elementary School.

Here is a list of the schools that will lose sixth grade next year:

  • Levi Elementary School
  • Coro Lake Elementary School
  • Double Tree Elementary School
  • Ford Road Elementary School
  • Westwood Elementary School
  • White Chapel Elementary School

The sixth graders at these schools will be absorbed into four area middle schools.

The middle schools in the southwest region will become grades six through eight while elementary schools will be Pre-K through fifth grade.

Attendance zones are being slightly altered, too, but parents seem to be willing to roll with the changes.

"It's fine. I'm ready for them to go to another school anyway," said Danita Smith. "It's time for change."

"Any changes are going to bring on problems at first, until you get used to them, so you got to adapt to them," said Shane Brown.

Two other meetings will take place Wednesday and Thursday at Ford Road Elementary School and Chickasaw Middle Schools, respectively. All three meetings are scheduled to last from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
