Power outages and huge hail reported after storm

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Tuesday, many people across the South are without power and waking up to damage after a storm swept through.

The most telling signs of all the destruction are all the battered vehicles stretching across the Jackson area. Many people report hearing the thunderous sounds of hail pounding down on vehicles during a hail storm.

Witnesses say the hail storm dumped stones, some as big as baseballs, for 10 minutes non-stop.

Pearl residents, Don and Jackie Kelly, were home when the storm hit.

"It was banging, banging, banging real loud and it busted the windows out of our bedroom, both windows and hail came inside, even in the bed," said Jackie Kelly.

A number of car dealerships got hit hard too. Dozens of vehicles were pummeled - causing damage that will cost millions of dollars.

That storm also packed wind gusts as strong as 77 miles per hour which was just powerful enough to blow an 18-wheeler over the side of an overpass in Tupelo - leaving the trailer part of the truck dangling from the railing. The driver made it out. But it was a frightening scene.

At this time, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says 17 counties sustained damage. That includes including Union, Grenada, Lee, and Tallahatchie Counties.
